I’m Latin…
I don’t have any hormone problem.

If anybody should know…
She would!
She said, “hormones do more than that!”
She eventually ordered me a hormone test.
I took it and guess what?
She was right!
I had very low testosterone levels.
What the heck.
I would have never guessed.
I went looking for a hormone doctor.
There were no doctors near me that knew anything about hormones…
I mean I knew endocrinologists…
But they all seem to specialize in every kind of hormone except testosterone.
In fact, they all told me to live with it…
It was part of aging, they said.
I needed to lose this belly not to just look better…
And live longer…
But my business couldn’t have a fat doctor sitting behind the desk.
We found a hormone doctor several hours from where we lived.
He tested all my hormones and he said,
You have the estrogen levels of a woman…
And the testosterone levels too.
I wanted to punch him.
He charged me this enormous fee…
Apparently, insurance doesn’t cover hormone therapy for men.
I started on a hormone program taking several different hormones.
The next thing that happened to me was PAIN!
The hormones had made me swell to the point that I could barely get out of bed.
I had developed bilateraly carpal tunne syndrome
And one of knees swelled to the point that an orthopedist wanted to do surgery.
I literally had to walk the walls with my hands to get from my bed to the restroom.
I QUIT!
It didn’t take long before all my pain went away.

Months later…
I was at a medical conference.
I was having a cocktail in the lounge.
Another attendee asked if he could sit with me.
As we were enjoying a whiskey…
He started talking about how he had ridden his bike over the Sierra.
I asked him his age…
He was 86 years old!
He had the body of a drill sargeant…
Not a bit of fat around his belly…
And shoulders that were solidly square.
I was in my 50s and I couldn’t ride my bike across town.
I asked him what his secret was…
And he said…
HORMONES!
I said, “Been there done that!”
He said, “You did it wrong then…”
I went from that conference and registered for a hormone conference sponsored by…

I could not believe what I learned.
I went on eventually to take the test to become certified in Anti-Aging Medicine.
I passed.
I started using what I had learned on my own body.
It was amazing.
I not only lost my belly…
I developed a body builder’s type body…

Menopause and Andropause!
Yeah, we all know what menopause is…
But what the heck is andropause?
It’s the male version of menopause.
The dictionary denies it in this way:

“a collection of symptoms, including an increase in abdominal fat, chronic fatigue, loss of motivation, and a decrease in libido, experienced by middle-aged men and attributed to a decline in testosterone levels.”
Well, as I was saying, as others walked into our clinics…

HORMONE OPTIMIZATION
When a woman goes into menopause…
It happens nearly overnight.
When a man goes into andropause…
It happens subtly.
Year by year after our 20s our testosterone levels become less and less.
Then one day we realize that we have become bitches…
I mean grumpy old men.
In fact, we don’t really realize it until more than one person has told us.
“Hey Doc, are you alright? You seem a bit testy”
“Honey, what’s wrong? That guy didn’t do anything wrong. I thought you were going to take his head off.”
Women’s hormones are complicated…
Men’s hormones are less so…
If we have low testosterone we suffer from a myriad of symptoms…
If we have high levels of testosterone…
Life is wonderful!
It’s really that simple.
The first step I had to take was to raise my testosterone.
And I had already tried to inject testosterone…
And you know how that went.
Not well!
So I wanted to do it naturally…
There was no magic pill.
Or magic injection…
There were 12 hormone steps I had to take…

When I had low testosterone, I was in hell.
When I had healthy levels of testosterone, I was in Heaven…
The problem?

Within belly fat exists enzymes that convert your testosterone into estradiol.
Estradiol is the feminine hormone that makes you grow man boobs…
it also makes you more sensitive…
It also makes you a bore…
You can always tell if a man has high estradiol levels…
Because if someone asks him to a party, it’s like pulling teeth to get him there…
And if he does go…
He finds a corner chair and falls asleep.
To stop the conversion of testosterone into estradiol…
YOU MUST LOSE THE BELLY!
THE NEXT STEP WAS I HAD TO SLEEP!
When you develop a belly…
And your testosterone is being converted to estradiol…
The estradiol will cause your prostate to swell…
In fact, estradiol is one of the primary causes of prostate cancer…
But when your prostate is enlarged…
You have to get up several times throughout the night to pee.
Also, there is another hormone that is well known for shrinking the prostate…
Therefore allowing for a better night’s sleep…
And it’s known for making you all warm and fuzzy…
It makes you want to cuddle.
Wives love this hormone.
And this hormone is also being converted to estradiol by your belly fat.
Sleep is super important because your testosterone is being produced by your body while you sleep…
It is imperative to get a good night’s sleep to improve testosterone levels.
If you do not sleep well…
Your stress hormones will increase.
And when your stress hormones increase…
Guess what happens?
Yup!
Your testosterone levels decrease!
THE NEXT STEP WAS TO DECREASE MY CHRONIC INFLAMMATION
Inflammation is the primary disruptor of hormones.
I discovered that there were several causes of my chronic inflammation…
The first was the food that I ate!
I had to develop an anti-inflammatory elimination diet…
What that means is I had to discover what foods caused inflammation…
And what foods didn’t!
You know what food caused me to inflame the most?
Oregano!
Oregano made me inflame to the point that I could not get my wedding ring off.
I would bloat and feel super tired after I had a meal with oregano within it…
I have found that everyone is different…
When it comes to what foods make you inflame.
I also found that there was no reason to restrict your calories…
Diets don’t work when you have low testosterone.
There is no reason to deprive yourself of calories.
You have to restrict your foods!
That’s one of the reasons men with low T can’t lose their weight!
It’s imperative that you find the foods that work for you…
That don’t cause you to inflame.
Once I discovered the foods that caused me to inflame…
And avoid them…
My belly literally melted away!
MY NEXT STEP WAS TO EAT HEALTHY FATS
And to eat lots of them…
I like fatty foods…
They are not only satiating…
They made my testosterone increase!
Good fats such as coconut oil, grass-fed butter, and olive oil…
Increased my testosterone production.
But the bad fats…
Decreased my levels.
it’s very important to eat foods with the good fats…
And avoid the bad fats.
Low-fat diets do not work for us guys with low testosterone.

3) Intermittent Fasting: Going 16 hours between dinner and breakfast is one of the best ways to boost testosterone. Consume your meals in an 8 hour window such as 11am – 7pm. Read this article for more info on fasting.
4) High Intensity Exercise: High intensity training, especially resistance training boosts testosterone. Do large muscle group, compound exercises such as squats, lunges, bench press, T-bar rows, pull-ups, overhead press, etc. Be sure to lift heavy!!
The more muscle tissue that is intensely stimulated, the more testosterone production will go up. Be sure to get good rest between workouts. I like to do an upper body day, lower body day and then a day off. Then back to upper body and lower body and then another day off…and so on and so on.
5) Low Intensity Movement: A sedentary lifestyle depletes testosterone but so does over-training. Be sure that your workouts are intense but short (30 minutes max). Throughout the day, get a lot of low-intensity movement such as walking, light cycling, playing, etc.
5) Bone Broth Protein: Bone Broth protein is a rich source of branched chain amino acids such as leucine. It has been shown to boost testosterone production when used in combination with high intensity exercise. You can find this here
6) Take Cold Showers: Cold showers have been known to stimulate and boost testosterone production and improve metabolism, detoxification and brain function. Start your shower with warm/hot water and turn it to cold for the last 30-60 seconds while pumping your muscles and creating a big shiver as your muscles contract. That will help to boost internal heat and boost testosterone production. This article will help you.
7) Optimize Your Vitamin D: Low vitamin D3 is associated with low testosterone production (15). Be sure to increase your vitamin D through good amounts of regular sun exposure and/or taking a high quality vitamin D3/K2 supplement.
8) Zinc and Magnesium: Be sure to optimize your zinc and magnesium levels. Both of these nutrients are key for testosterone production. Pumpkin seeds are one of the richest sources of both zinc and magnesium. Additionally, make green drinks or use super green powders and consume healthy organic meat products.
9) Reduce Estrogen Load: Avoid foods with phytoestrogens such as soy, flax and many beans. Additionally, consume lots of cruciferous veggies and in particular broccoli sprouts which have tons of I3C and DIM which help to detoxify bad estrogen metabolites that cause problems with estrogen/testosterone balance.
I also recommend steamed crucifers (brocolli, cauliflower, cabbage, brussel sprouts, etc.) with grass-fed butter/ghee melted over the top and added herbs. You can also use an estrogen detoxifying supplement such as EstroProtect here
10) Practice Deep Breathing: Deep breathing can help calm an overactive sympathetic (fight or flight) nervous system and relax the body. This lowers stress hormone and enhances the production of sex hormones like testosterone that are needed for growth and repair. Check this article out for more info on deep breathing.
11) Eat Spinach and Garlic: Spinach contains its own type of plant based steroids called phytoecdysteroids. These unique compounds protect the spinach plant from plant-parasitic nematodes. They also help to balance blood sugar, stabilize stress hormone and boost testosterone (16, 17).
Garlic has been shown to improve testosterone output in rats on a high protein diet (18). Since a testosterone boosting nutrition plan should naturally be higher in quality proteins it makes sense to use lots of garlic as well.
12) Use Aswaghanda: This adaptogenic herb has been shown to reduce stress hormone, increase DHEA and boost testosterone levels. I recommend using it in combination with bone broth protein in the Bone Broth Protein Fit and Muscular here

Hi Dr Jockers,
I was reading in the university health news daily website that a study performed by researchers at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center found that men with prostate cancer who ate 3 tablespoons of milled or ground flax seeds each day had decreased prostate cancer cell proliferation compared to similar men who did not eat flax seeds. According to the American Cancer Society, men who supplement their diets with flax seed have lower PSA levels and slower growth of benign as well as cancerous prostate cells.
Perhaps the effect of phytoestrogenic in humans it’s not fully understood as yet.

I would not recommend TRT unless there is a medical condition that has rendered the body incapable of supporting healthy production!

Hey Virginia, I generally recommend avoiding most beans and grains. Soy is a definite. If you are to consume other beans and legumes, I would recommend soaking and sprouting them.
